Your Safari Head Start: Answers to Common Mammal Questions

Updated: 1 hour ago

Going on safari is exciting, especially if it is your first time in the wild. The animals, the incredible landscapes, and the unexpected moments all come together to create an unforgettable experience. But with that excitement also comes a lot of curiosity. Here are some of the most common questions people ask about mammals on safari. Think of this as your quick guide to help you get the most out of your time in the bush.

Do all animals have homes or dens? Most large animals do not have a fixed home like we do. They can be found almost anywhere and often sleep in a different place each night. Some might rest in one area for a few days, but then move on. When it comes to raising babies, many animals do use dens or sheltered places for a short time. If an animal defends its area from others of the same species, that space is called a territory. If it just moves through an area without defending it, we call that a home range.

What is the difference between indigenous and endemic?

A species is indigenous when it occurs naturally in a certain area and was not introduced by humans. A species is endemic when it is found only in one specific area and nowhere else in the world. Why do animals need camouflage?

Camouflage helps animals survive. Prey animals use it to avoid being seen by predators. Predators use it to stay hidden from their prey so they can hunt more effectively.

What types of camouflage are there?

Concealing coloration - This is when an animal's body color blends with its surroundings, such as grass or soil. It is the most common form of camouflage. A lion in dry grass is a good example. Countershading - The animal is darker on top and lighter underneath. This helps it stay hidden whether it is viewed from above or below. The impala is a perfect example. Disruptive coloration - Patterns like stripes or spots break up the outline of an animal's body. This makes it harder to see. Zebras are one of the best examples. Disguise - This is when the animal’s shape or appearance looks like something else in the environment. A grasshopper that looks like a leaf or stone is a good example. Do all animals have stable families?

No, most animals do not live in long-term family groups. Males often mate with more than one female and usually do not help raise the young. Even in species that seem to form pairs, the male is often less involved and spends much of his time alone. It is not common to see the male, female, and young all together for long periods. Why must we not feed wild animals? Wild animals are naturally cautious around people. Even though many of them are stronger than us, it is their fear that keeps both them and us safe. If you feed them, especially by hand, they begin to lose that fear. They may start approaching people expecting food, and if they do not get what they want, they can become aggressive. This puts both people and the animals in danger. How do animals see at night?

Most animals see much better than we do in the dark. Their eyes have more light-sensitive cells, which allow them to see clearly in low light or at night. This helps them hunt, avoid danger, and move around when it is dark. What is the reason for fur?

The main purpose of fur is to provide insulation. It helps the animal stay warm in cold weather and protects the skin from heat and sun. Fur can also play a role in camouflage, communication, and attracting mates. What do animals do in bad weather? Wild animals are generally tougher than people. Most will still feed and go about their usual behavior in cold or rainy conditions. They cannot go to the kitchen or order food, so they must stay active. During heavy rain or strong winds, they may rest or hide, but if the bad weather continues, they will come out to feed. Predators often use these conditions to their advantage because it becomes harder for prey to see, hear, or smell them.

Can animals drink bad water? Yes, many wild animals can drink from natural water sources that look dirty or stagnant. Their bodies are adapted to handle it, as long as the water is not polluted with harmful chemicals. Clean but muddy water is usually not a problem for them.

Why do animals sniff urine? Sniffing urine is a way for animals, mostly males, to gather information. They can tell if a female is ready to mate by analyzing her scent. This is possible thanks to a special organ located between the nose and mouth, called the vomeronasal organ. It draws in the scent and sends signals to the brain. This behavior is called flehmen and is commonly seen when males curl back their lips after smelling.
