Elephant have the longest gestation period of any mammal; 22 months(!!). The females give birth every 3-5 years and the youngster wil then stick to mom for at least 5 years and up to 10 years. If the individual is a male, he will move on when he gets sexually mature at around 15 years old. If the calf is a female, she is likely to stay with the herd for the rest of her life. There are recordings of females breaking away and starting their own herd, but this is not common.
